A Message from OVW Director Cindy Dyer

"During National Police Week, the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) expresses an ongoing appreciation to the men and women who are dedicating their lives to protect, defend and assist victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking.

Law enforcement professionals serve as key partners in our efforts to combat violence against women. They have been instrumental in two of our oldest grant programs, Grants to Encourage Arrest Polices and Enforcement of Protections Orders and the STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program.

Police officers have the difficult role of walking into a crime scene and are often the first responders.  I thank the law enforcement community for their work and the sacrifices they make to protect victims of violent crimes by serving as an integral part of a coordinated community response.

OVW’s partnership with the law enforcement community is a fundamental component of stopping violence against all women, assisting families and strengthening communities.  During this week, please join OVW in recognizing and honoring those who have given their lives and those who strive every day, to create safety in our homes, streets and neighborhoods."

Faith-Based and Community Initiatives

"The indispensable and transforming work of faith-based and other charitable service groups must be encouraged. Government cannot be replaced by charities, but it can and should welcome them as partners. We must heed the growing consensus across America that successful government social programs work in fruitful partnership with community-serving and faith-based organizations." - President George W. Bush
