National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women

The National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women is an advisory body which is co-chaired by the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Members are invited to serve on the National Advisory Committee for a two-year term. As an advisory body, the committee convenes as a group, at least twice a year, to address violence against women. National Advisory Committee members share their thoughts, ideas, and expertise by submitting recommendations on a variety of priority issues as the federal government develops its policies to address the crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.

On December 3rd and 4th, the United State Department of Justice hosted a meeting for the National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women (the “Committee”) in Washington, D.C. The first Committee was established in 1995 to provide practical and general policy advice concerning the implementation of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to the Attorney General and the Secretary of Health and Human Services. These committee members, chosen from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, were selected by the White House in 2005. This December marks the completion of their two year term of service. The committee members presented their final reports on the following four issues: child witnesses to domestic violence, teen dating violence, outreach to faith-based organizations, and expanding the reach of victim services. In early 2008, a final report will be submitted to the Attorney General and posted on this website.

“I would like to personally thank all of the committee members for their hard-work, valuable insights, and commitment to changing beliefs and practices regarding violence against women.”OVW Acting Director, Mary Beth Buchanan
