The landmark American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), signed into law by President Obama, provides the Justice Department’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) with $20.8 million for the Indian Tribal Governments Program to decrease the number of violent crimes committed against Indian women, help Indian tribes use their independent authority to respond to crimes of violence against Indian women and make sure that people who commit violent crimes against Indian women are held responsible for their actions. The award period is 36 months.
The Recovery Act provides OVW with $2.8 million for the Tribal Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalitions Program to provide much needed resources for organizing and supporting efforts to end violence against Indian women and provide technical assistance to member programs. The award period is 24 months.
OVW will announce Recovery Act awards to Tribal Governments and Tribal Coalitions on a rolling basis throughout the summer.

OVW announced more than $134 million in Recovery Act awards to states, territories, and state coalitions to support comprehensive strategies addressing violence against women. The STOP (Services, Training, Officers, Prosecutors) Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program (STOP Program) supports a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to stopping and responding to crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.
By supporting coordination among state agencies and service organizations, this funding offers an opportunity to state administrators and survivors of violence to be part of and benefit from the Recovery Act. Cross-cutting services may include but are not limited to educational opportunities, job training, housing and social services.
States will release requests for proposals to local communities requesting proposals that will be reviewed through a competitive selection process at the state level. Please contact your state's STOP administering agency for information about applying for STOP Program funds. A complete contact list of STOP administering agencies is posted on OVW's website: http://www.ovw.usdoj.gov/stop-contactlist.htm.
