2009 OVW Tribal Consultation

The 2009 Tribal Consultation will be convened by the Office on Violence Against Women on October 30, 2009 in Minneapolis, MN. The purpose of the OVW Tribal Consultations is to engage in a government-to-government dialogue between the United States Government and the leaders from Indian tribal governments on how to best enhance the safety of Alaska Native and American Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. The consultation is will solicit recommendations from tribal government leaders on the following three topics.

  • Administering grant funds appropriated for tribal governments and programs created to benefit tribal governments by the original Violence Against Women Act and subsequent legislation.
  • Enhancing the safety of Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
  • Strengthening the Federal response to crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

2008 Tribal Consultation

On December 10, 2008, the Office on Violence Against Women, United States Department of Justice held its third annual Tribal Consultation at the Palm Springs Convention Center in Palm Springs, California. One hundred thirty four tribal and federal officials participated, including representatives of sixty-one Tribal Nations from across the United States. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians served as the host Tribe for the Consultation. This document summarizes the recommendations that resulted from the event.

2007 Tribal Consultation

September 19, 2007 in Albuquerque, NM

This year's consultation took place on September 19, 2007 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The purpose of the consultation is to solicit recommendations from tribal government leaders on the following three topics:

  • Administering grant funds appropriated for tribal governments and programs created to benefit tribal governments by the original Violence Against Women Act and subsequent legislation;
  • Enhancing the safety of Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking: and
  • Strengthening the Federal response to crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) hosted its first annual consultation in September 2006 in Prior Lake, Minnesota.
