The Office on Violence Against Women hosts tribal consultations once each year.  The purpose of the OVW Tribal Consultations is to engage in a government-to-government dialogue between the United States Government and the leaders from Indian tribal governments on how to best enhance the safety of Alaska Native and American Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. The consultation is will solicit recommendations from tribal government leaders on the following three topics.

  • Administering grant funds appropriated for tribal governments and programs created to benefit tribal governments by the original Violence Against Women Act and subsequent legislation.
  • Enhancing the safety of Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
  • Strengthening the Federal response to crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
2011 Tribal Consultation

The United States Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women, will co-host the annual Violence Against Women Tribal Consultation in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Hotel on December 15, 2011. The consultation will focus on improving the response to violence against women in tribal communities.

Our goal is to engage in a dialogue between the United States government and leaders from Indian tribal governments on how to enhance the safety of Alaska Native and American Indian communities and prevent violence against women.

2009 Tribal Consultation

The 2009 Tribal Consultation occurred on October 30, 2009 in Minneapolis, MN. The purpose of the OVW Tribal Consultations was to engage in a government-to-government dialogue between the United States Government and the leaders from Indian tribal governments on how to best enhance the safety of Alaska Native and American Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. The consultation solicited recommendations from tribal government leaders on the following three topics:

  • Administering grant funds appropriated for tribal governments and programs created to benefit tribal governments by the original Violence Against Women Act and subsequent legislation.
  • Enhancing the safety of Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

2008 Tribal Consultation

OVW held its third annual Tribal Consultation in Palm Springs CA on December 10, 2008. One hundred thirty four tribal and federal officials participated, including representatives of sixty-one Tribal Nations from across the United States. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians were the host Tribe for the Consultation. The “2008 Office on Violence Against Women Tribal Consultation Summary” outlines the recommendations from the event.
